Toronto, famous for being one of the world’s most livable cities, just became more lovable. The city sports some of the world’s finest eateries and its diverse population provides the discerning customer with a smorgasbord of dining establishments to die for. The sheer volume of restaurants coupled with high living costs mean that most Torontonians get very little chance to explore the amazing culinary landscape. All that changes during the Winterlicious extravaganza; a food fest extraordinaire that sees a vast array of interesting eateries around the city offering prix fixe three course menus for very reasonable rates.
The event runs from January 27th to February 9th with lunch menus which run between $15 to $25 and dinner for a reasonable $25 to $45 (excluding tax and gratuity). This places fine dining experiences well within the grasp of the average Joe. Now in its tenth year, Winterlicious offers not only fine dining experiences, but also magnificent food events.
February 2nd sees the budding food tsars at the George Brown Food Academy prepare a four course meal infused with chocolate that is bound to put paid to your New Year’s resolutions. Foods on offer include white chocolate ravioli with crab, chicken with Mexican chocolate mole sauce, chocolate filled cheese (no, that’s no typo) and the crowning glory of the evening; chocolate dipped bacon. Not only can you cram yourself with delicious noms, proceeds from the dinner will help to fund students enrolled in the baking and pastry arts.
If you have more of a savoury tooth, then Pasta Making with Mama Rosa is for you. Owner and chef-in-chief of 7 Numbers, Rosa Marinuzzi, demonstrates the pasta-making skills passed down to her from her grandmother and mother in Italy. Participants get to partake as Rosa serves a three course meal featuring some of her best dishes.
If your favourite part of dinner is of the more, um, liquid variety, you can enjoy a fascinating wine tour of Casa Loma. With Decanting the Castle; Myths Uncorked, participants get to enjoy an interactive four course meal peppered with tastings of a wide selection of fine wines and a tour of the castle itself.
Whether you participate in the workshops or just get out and savour the amazing food, Winterlicious is a wonderful opportunity to experience the delicious dining to be had in the city of Toronto. The Winterlicious evens have been wildly popular in the past, so we suggest that you book in advance. Happy eating!
