What is Good to Buy in Bulk?
As a smart spender and saver, you know all about making smart purchases when you head to the grocery store or warehouse chain. In theory, it’s a great idea. Spend a little to get a lot. What could go wrong with that? Well, if you don’t exercise some control you could spend a lot and not come home with much.
Know What you Need
When you’re about to shop in bulk, you’ve gotta know what you’re getting into. This isn’t a quick trip to the corner store, this is a potential mass purchase. Make a list of the things you use often and check out the following tips to make the Costco run a success.
Stick to the Basics
Again, don’t get fancy with these kind of shopping trips. Make sure your bulk purchases revolve around staples and things you actually use. This isn’t the time to think, ‘Hey, maybe I DO need 18 bottles of that new salad dressing”. Try out one first, at least.
Non-Perishable is Your Friend
While some people have success buying fruits and veggies in bulk, I don’t. Sure, I can get a great deal on a huge box of produce, but at the rate I cook, it almost always goes bad before it’s used up (and now I’m not saving cash anymore). Unless you’ve got adequate freezing alternatives, the same goes for meats.
Some great bulk items to pick up are:
- canned staples (diced tomatoes, sauces, soups, stews)
- hygiene products (soap, deoderant, shampoo, toothpaste)
- batteries, vitamins
